Important questions based on Osmotic pressure
1. What are isotonic solutions? Provide one example.
Answer: Solutions having equal osmotic pressure are called isotonic solutions, e.g. 0.1 M glucose and 0.1 M sucrose solutions.
2. What is Van't Hoff equation for dilute solution?
Answer: πV = nRT where n is the number of moles of solute in V liters of solution, π is osmotic pressure, T is temperature, and R is the gas constant.
3. Why does water from the soil rise to the top of a tall tree?
Answer: Due to osmosis through the roots because root cell walls are made of semipermeable membrane.
4. What happens when blood cells are placed in pure water?
Answer: Due to osmosis, water molecules move into blood cells through the cell walls. As a result, blood cells swell and may even burst.
